Port Charlotte is a pretty conservation village of whitewashed Victorian cottages originally built to provide accommodation for the local distillery workers. The village has a tranquil location on the shores of Loch Indaal with its white sandy beaches and sheltered waters.
It is perfectly located for the many attractions Islay has to offer including tours of the 9 local distilleries, bird and wild life watching, walking and cycling trails, pony trekking, island hopping to Jura or Colonsay, stunning deserted beaches stretching for miles, a world class links golf course and many ancient historical sites.
There are four excellent restaurants in the village: the award winning Port Charlotte Hotel with its fine dining restaurant and a cosy bar with over 200 Islay whiskies on offer; the Loch Indaal Hotel, with locally sourced seafood and reasonably priced pub menu; The Lochindaal Seafood Kitchen for seafood and dishes using locally sourced produce; Port Mor Community Café serving teas and coffees as well as a multi cuisine menu and takeaway service throughout the day.
Both hotels regularly have live traditional music in the evening.
Local amenities include a well-stocked village shop with post office and fuel pump, bicycle hire, the Museum of Islay Life and the Islay Wildlife Centre.
Islay is world famous for its whisky, home to nine working distilleries producing some of the most sought-after single malts on earth – among them Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Bowmore, Bruichladdich, Bunnahabhain, Caol Ila, Kilchoman and Ardnahoe. Most welcome visitors for tours and tastings, all within a short drive of the cottage.
Every May the island comes alive for Fèis Ìle, the Islay Festival of Malt and Music. After a day on the whisky trail, there’s no finer way to end the evening than with a dram beside the wood-burning stove back at Rosgorm.
Islay rewards slow exploration. Miles of empty white-sand beaches line the coast, while the lochs and machair draw huge numbers of birds, including the overwintering barnacle and white-fronted geese. Seals, otters, red deer and golden eagles are all a common sight for those who keep their eyes open.
Walkers and cyclists have the run of quiet single-track roads and coastal paths, and the island’s history runs deep – from the ancient Kildalton Cross and ruined chapels to Finlaggan, once the seat of the Lords of the Isles. Regular ferries also make it easy to hop across to neighbouring Jura and Colonsay for the day.
“We loved your house and all its wonderful touches. It allowed us a quiet space to relax. I would hope to return … for a longer break and will certainly be recommending it. My husband particularly enjoyed the coffee maker. Yarek and Kamila were very helpful and welcoming.”
“We loved the house and felt so at ease there. It is just beautiful. Even the beds were fabulously comfortable and luxurious. Thank you so much for a wonderful stay.”
“The cottage was fantastic thanks and I take it whoever designed the hot water tap got a knighthood for that! What an incredible invention!”
“Thank you so much for letting us stay in your wonderful house. It is absolutely beautiful and everything we wanted, and more. The layout, the location, the interiors, the rooms, the views, the facilities…everything was perfect.”
Rosgorm is our family home on Islay, and when we’re not there ourselves we love making it available to guests throughout the year. The cottage is available for weekly stays or short breaks of 3 nights or more, with flexible arrival and departure dates.
Use the calendar below to check availability and book, or get in touch if you have any questions.
The cottage will be ready for you from 4pm on your arrival day. We ask that guests depart by 10am on the day of departure. Please let us know your expected arrival time in advance so we can make sure everything is ready for you.
Your stay includes broadband internet, Freeview TV, all bed linen and towels (excluding beach towels), full central heating, and reasonable use of electricity. Beds are made up for your arrival. Travel cots and highchairs are available on request – just let us know when you book.
Well-behaved pets are welcome by prior arrangement. Please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll confirm the details with you.
We ask that guests don’t smoke anywhere on the premises. An additional deep-cleaning charge will apply if this isn’t observed.
The cottage sleeps up to 6 guests. This is a condition of our Short Term Let Licence issued by Argyll and Bute Council (licence number AR00708F). Please let us know if you expect your group size to change.
There’s plenty of parking on the street outside the cottage and in nearby side streets. Please note that guests are not able to charge electric vehicles using the cottage’s electricity supply. The nearest EV charging points are at the car park in Bowmore, Port Ellen ferry terminal, and the Machrie Hotel.
We’d strongly recommend booking your ferry or flight as soon as your stay is confirmed – popular sailings and flights fill up quickly, especially in peak season and during festival weeks. Bridgend is around 20 miles from Port Ellen and 16 miles from Port Askaig, so do allow plenty of travel time when planning around ferry crossings.
We’d strongly encourage guests to take out holiday insurance to cover cancellations, travel disruption, and loss of or damage to personal belongings. Please note that we can’t be held responsible for late or non-arrival due to ferry or flight disruptions caused by bad weather or other circumstances beyond our control.
For enquiries not made through the booking calendar, you’re welcome to get in touch directly. Use the form below, email us at rhinnsretreats@gmail.com, or call Joe on +44 7909 960891.
